Everything Teens Need to Know About Driving Laws in Florida

Florida is a popular state in the United States. Learning to drive is almost a rite of passage in every Florida teenager’s life. But this milestone comes with the weight of responsibilities. Florida laws are framed such that they not only protect the young drivers but also ease them into driving gradually.

If you understand the rules and comply, it will ensure your safety as well as the safety of the fellow passengers on the road. It is important that the teenagers, as well as the parents, should be aware of the eligibility criteria as well as license restrictions before trying to get full driving privileges.

Age Requirements for Driving

The first thing is “How old do you have to be to drive in Florida?” Florida has a graduated driver licensing (GDL) system and has been framed to reduce the high risks that young drivers may face while learning to drive. The permitted age for a learner’s license is 15 years, followed by an intermediate license at the age of 16. Finally, the full driver’s license can be obtained once you are 18 years of age.

The Learner’s Permit

Florida teens may apply at the age of 15 years for a learner’s permit or a learner’s license. They need to clear a vision test, a hearing test, and an exam that covers traffic laws and road signs. They are also expected to complete a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course.

A licensed adult above the age of 21 is expected to accompany the teen at all times. The adult should be seated next to the driver. In the first three months, they are allowed to drive during daylight hours only. After the first three months, they can drive until 10 p.m.

Intermediate License

To get the intermediate license, teens should have a learner’s permit for at least 12 months, have no traffic violation convictions, and be 16 years old. A behind-the-wheel driving test for evaluation of practical driving skills is also included.

The intermediate license holder can drive between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. On reaching 17, they can drive till midnight. There is a restriction on the number of non-family members or under-18 passengers they are allowed to drive.

Full License

On turning 18, Florida teens can obtain a full license. They are expected to have enough experience to be able to handle various driving conditions and situations independently. They are also expected to follow speed limits, avoid distractions, wear seat belts, and not drive under the influence.

Teen Driving Restrictions (Under Age 18)

Even after receiving your license, Florida has curfew laws for drivers under 18:

  • 16-year-olds: Cannot drive between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM unless driving to/from work or accompanied by a licensed driver 21+.
  • 17-year-olds: Cannot drive between 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM under the same exceptions.

Violating these restrictions can lead to penalties, including license suspension.

Zero Tolerance for Alcohol

Florida has a zero-tolerance policy for underage drinking and driving. For drivers under 21, a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.02% or higher results in an automatic license suspension for six months, even if it is your first offense.

Cell Phone & Texting Laws

While all Florida drivers are banned from texting while driving, the law is especially strict for new drivers. Teens should also know:

  • Using a phone in a school zone or construction zone is illegal, unless using hands-free.
  • Distracted driving can lead to fines, points on your license, and higher insurance rates.

Key Takeaways

  • Driving as a teen in Florida is both an exciting opportunity and a serious responsibility.
  • Understanding and following the state’s driving laws not only keeps you safe but helps you avoid fines, suspensions, and legal trouble.
  • Build your driving skills gradually, respect the rules of the road, and always drive with focus and caution.
